ARTICLE SUMMARY:
New data documenting the benefits of endovascular clot removal for ischemic stroke, even in patients who present as late as 24-hours after stroke onset, have opened up endovascular thrombectomy to a much larger patient pool and raised the stakes for companies targeting this space. Even so, competitors would be well-advised to take a page from Medtronic and keep a close eye on new innovations in this fast-moving field.
A number of clinical studies have now documented the benefits of mechanical thrombectomy (clot retrievers and aspiration devices) in carefully selected patients suffering from a large-vessel ischemic stroke, even those who present up to 24 hours after stroke onset.
