In recent years, there has been much discussion of the most clinically and cost-effective manner to identify, in patients with potential signs and symptoms of heart disease, issues that could cause serious problems within six months or a year—an artery with significant stenosis, for example. At issue is the proper triage for these patients when invasive coronary angiography in the catheterization lab provides the most definitive answers, but is expensive and contraindicated for many patients, while noninvasive imaging alternatives are less predictive of the presence of disease requiring revascularization.
