Finnish start-up Surgify spun out from Finland’s Aalto University in 2017, founded by a multidisciplinary team with diverse specialties. The company’s CEO, Visa Sippola, has a background in medicine and was working on a PhD thesis on neurological disease at the time, becoming familiar with neurological and spinal procedures as well as surgical power tools. To improve the safety of bone resection, Sippola sought to develop a tissue-selective device that would spare soft tissue without impeding the surgeon’s effectiveness at cutting through bone.
