ARTICLE SUMMARY:
Israeli start-up CartiHeal has developed the first off-the-shelf scaffold technology that is able to reliably regenerate true hyaline cartilage and its underlying subchondral bone in the knee, ankle and great toe joints. The company hopes to provide a much-needed solution for the growing worldwide population with cartilage damage due to trauma, sports injury, disease, obesity or age-related degeneration.
Since joint cartilage possesses only a weak capacity for self-repair, its regeneration is considered one of the most significant challenges facing orthopedic medicine.
