It was during his orthopedic residency at UCLA that Justin Barad, MD, began to think that there might be better ways to train and assess surgeons. More than once, he scrubbed in on a surgery, and would be directed to scrub out and Google the procedure because the team was stuck on a particular step. “This was happening enough that I’d say ‘Hey, is this an issue?’ And they’d say ‘Naw. That’s just how it works.’”
