ARTICLE SUMMARY:
A German start-up aims to let people living with diabetes say goodbye to test strips and needle pricks with its optical glucose monitor.
Thorsten Lubinski, a computer science and healthcare entrepreneur by background, co-founded Berlin-based start-up DiaMonTech in 2015 with Werner Mäntele, PhD, to commercialize the technology Mäntele had developed in his optical laboratory at Goethe University in Frankfurt. Mäntele’s work focused on measuring the specific responsiveness of the glucose molecule to certain wavelengths of light, leading to the development of a fully noninvasive glucose monitor that could replace test strips and needles. Contrasting Mäntele’s innovation with those of others attempting to create comparable devices, Lubinski, who serves as DiaMonTech’s CEO, says, “I found a lot of others approaching this field were looking for small and cheap solutions with less emphasis on accuracy.”
