Cogwear: Wearable Quantitative Mental Health Monitoring

ARTICLE SUMMARY:

Electroencephalography has been an accepted measure of neurological activity for decades, yet many mental health patients have never had portable access to the data that an EEG scan provides, nor have researchers and clinicians been able to translate EEG data into a quantitative measure of behavioral health. Cogwear is seeking to offer millions of anxiety sufferers a medical-grade EEG monitoring platform in a convenient and form-fitting headband device with intelligent features.

One of the most challenging aspects of living with a mental illness is constantly self-assessing and self-analyzing to figure out one's current status, the stimuli that led to that status, and the next steps to take in order to achieve homeostasis. For people living with severe anxiety or dissociative disorders, this process can be consuming and frustrating, as they typically have no objective data at their disposal and must rely on their own perception, which may be distorted as a result of the underlying condition.

At this point, some devices on the wellness market are capable of reading brain waves. However, despite success aiding sleep and performance athletics, none so far has been FDA-approved for a particular indication nor have any been able to correlate Electroencephalography (EEG) responses to behavioral health conditions. Enter Cogwear LLC, developer of an EEG-detecting headband that is wireless, soft and conforming, and can deliver clinical-grade brain activity data in real time without the help of a professional using onboard algorithms to extrapolate conclusions.
