ARTICLE SUMMARY:

A Boston start-up takes an innovative approach to local anesthesia that combines safety, duration, and ease of use.

Founded in 2019 as a spinout of Massachusetts General Hospital, Brixton Biosciences is bringing to market the novel drug-free pain management solution Neural Ice. Designated as a Breakthrough Device by the FDA, Neural Ice is an injectable that is shipped and stored at room temperature and frozen prior to injection around the desired target nerve (see Figure 1). By inducing cryolipolysis of the myelin sheath of a nerve, Neural Ice causes a reversible form of nerve disruption known as Wallerian degeneration, a well-understood biological mechanism that blocks pain signals long-term.
