Before starting Averto Medical, known until recently as Savage Medical, and serving as Senior Vice-President of Engineering, Jeffrey Etter met co-founder Kenton Fong through the Stanford Biodesign program while Fong was completing his surgical residency. Etter designed the original version of the lead product of Spiracur, a wound healing company that raised more than $50 million to commercialize their novel wound care product. Spiracur eventually sold in 2015 to Acelity, which was in turn acquired by 3M in 2019. After many years where Etter went on to run Ingenio, a successful medtech design firm, and Fong went on to develop a clinical practice in reconstructive surgery, Etter reconnected with Fong to form a new venture based on an idea Fong had for bowel protection.
