CDRH Taps Former Industry Exec, Surgeon to Run Evaluation and Quality Office

ARTICLE SUMMARY:

Ross “Rusty” Segan, a consultant who has served as a chief medical officer at multiple, large medtech companies and as a US Army surgeon, has been hired as the new director of CDRH’s Office of Product Evaluation and Quality, where he’ll oversee the center’s device review, compliance, and quality programs.

FDA’s device center is bringing on former device industry executive and surgeon Ross “Rusty” Segan, MD, as its new director of the Office of Product Evaluation and Quality (OPEQ).

Segan currently works as a consultant for device and life sciences companies and serves on company boards. He previously served as chief medical officer of Olympus, and within Johnson & Johnson’s DePuy Synthes business and Covidien’s Surgical Solutions business (before it was acquired by Medtronic). 

He’s also a trained surgeon who taught at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, and performed minimally invasive surgeries during service in the US Army, which included a deployment in Afghanistan, where he suffered a spinal injury that ended his clinical surgical career
