The CPT Editorial Panel approved 23 new Category I and 10 new Category III codes during its recent February meeting, according to the official summary of panel actions report issued March 5. Among the procedures winning dedicated Category III codes, allowing better tracking in the healthcare system, if not consistent reimbursement: AI-assisted perivascular fat analysis of cardiac risk, precuneus magnetic stimulation (which has been studied to slow cognitive decline in Alzheimer’s disease), and low-energy ureteral lithotripsy. New Category I codes will address ablation for bone tumors and unattended sleep testing. Code requests for an additional 30 procedures and services were rejected or withdrawn during the American Medical Association panel meeting.
